Dream Interpretation

People dream. However some people want to know what their dreams mean. Dream interpretation studies that. Some people consider this a science some people consider it an art . Either way it can be a lot of fun.

In ancient times people believed gods communicated through dreams. Dream interpretation was the realm of sorcerers. There were Greek temples where people would go to find cures. They thought the gods were helping them by sending dreams. A priest attended the temple to help people determine the meaning of their dreams, and thus the intended cures from the gods. Egyptian priests studied dream interpretation. The Bible stories show Joseph interpreting dreams for the Pharaoh. There are even hieroglyphics that depict dreams and the process of interpreting them.

Dream analysis became popular in psychology with the work of Sigmund Freud. His famous work was a book titled the Interpretation of Dreams. He claimed that dreams express people’s desires and inner wishes. He also held that dreams were always based on the previous day’s events. Freud developed the concept of the inner censor as the regulating portion of the mind that communicated through dreams. This later became known as the super ego.

Freud talked about people’s abilities to resist things. In other words when they are awake they self censored themselves. People keep careful control over what they do and even what they think. The filters still operate when people dream, so the dreams have many strange images. Freud came up with a standard set of distortions that were present in dreams, and applied these in dream interpretation. He used these to analyze the patient based on the imagery present in the dream.

For Freud nightmares weren’t insecure thoughts. Instead they were the result of the ego being frustrated at not being allowed free reign. Many people think Freud always talked about sex in performing a dream interpretation. But Freud didn’t think everything was about sex.

Maybe you can perform dream interpretation.

Dream analysis has been around for a long time. Priests in Egypt helped people find messages from the gods in their dreams. Greeks treated dreams in a similar fashion. They had temples dedicated to healing where priests would help people interpret their dreams, hoping to find the secrets to health revealed by the gods. That was really not so different from modern psychoanalysts who try to help people determine their mental state as revealed in their dreams. Not all people have time for therapy. For them there are places online to find information about dreams.

Dreams A Dream Dictionary, is a great website for dream analysis. It has categories for elements found in most dreams. Then it explains the significance of each of these. Dream analysis as expected treats coffins as negatives. Coffins mean death. In a dream some people see a coffin while others are inside a coffin. If a person is in a coffin it means something unpleasant is happening. Often if a person is looking at a coffin in a dream it relates to the end of something, burying an event or idea. Seeing a person in a coffin could mean you want to stop your relationship with them. Ending things isn’t always bad. Coffins aren’t necessarily negative in dreams.
